PAINTING WITH PIXELS SINCE 1983
Welcome to my collection of images created over the past 30 years. My ‘medium’ is a computer and has been since 1983, from a few hundred pixels to billions of pixels! My own journey has taken a parallel path with the technology that continues to develop in the world we live in today.
My Journey Begins: I arrived here on Planet Earth in 1966. By the age of 4 or 5 I discovered paint, colour, texture and my problems with letters and numbers. At 15 I was diagnosed with dyslexia, explaining my various issues and why I always seem to make a mess! I studied graphic design, photography and illustration for 4 years, where I was introduced to an ‘Apple’ not a fruit, but a computer... Oh and a ‘plastic mouse’?! I soon realised this allowed me to create images similar in style to how I painted. The images were very basic 560x192 pixels and no colour just greys, but I could see where this may go in the future... 40 years on and I am working on images with 50 billion pixels and all the COLOURS I want! The other advantage over ’traditional’ paint was the undo feature and making less mess!
I never looked back!’ My first real job was in 1987 creating graphics for ‘slide presentations’, which at the time was about the only way to reproduce a good image from a computer. The company developed their own ‘paint’ program ‘SilverTree’. I was given the opportunity to create images which were used to help promote the product. The software was similar to ‘Photoshop’ creating 8K images, amazingly high resolution in 1989! This showed me the potential of the developing technology and what might be possible one day! After various jobs and developments in design and artwork. I started freelancing as a graphic designer, creating ‘Point Of Sale’ and ‘illustrations’ for many global companies. I worked with two authors illustrating 2 series of childrens books, ‘FERGUS THE TRACTOR’ 12 books and ‘RUBY THE ROUTEMASTER’ 3 books. In 2005 I got really sick... and my life changed!
It was time to concentrate on my own work, as it was now technically possible to do what I had imagined back in 1989! In 1989 I had an idea to display high resolution images on large screens like viewing a painting, but instead of pigment, using light to produce incredible colours. Many of my ideas were planned out before I could even create them, I just had to wait for technology to evolve and allow me to produce them, NOW I CAN! FOLIO•ONE is a selection of my digital image created at high quality 8K resolution. Many of them are individual images and others are in albums offering a choice of colours. My pictures are available as bespoke limited edition giclée canvases and as framed prints. Each canvas is a unique representation of my digital artwork and made to order just for you! Signed, numbered and certified as a truly unique ‘DIGITALORIGINAL’!
These are my ‘DIGITALORIGINALS’ created on a computer by me… NOT by a computer!
‘THE WALL’ created in 2008 the image shows the entire flood defence wall and steps, which was finished in 1988, after a devastating storm and flood in 1981. This destroyed the previous concrete slope and its wall. This is Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, England where we live and work, dry and safe behind that wall!
